Golden Bridge Da Nang: Walking Above the Clouds
Golden Bridge Da Nang rises high above the forests of Ba Na Hills, where two giant hands appear to lift a ribbon of gold into the clouds.
Two giant hands rise out of the mountainside, weathered and mossy, holding up a ribbon of gold that curves out over the forest below. It looks ancient. It isn’t.
High in the Ba Na Hills, nearly 1,400 metres above sea level, Golden Bridge Da Nang was originally built to connect the cable car station with the gardens of Le Jardin d’Amour. It quickly became one of Vietnam’s most recognisable landmarks. The hands appear carved from stone, weathered and softened by time, but they’re actually built from a steel frame and wire mesh beneath a layer of sculpted mortar, an illusion convincing enough that many visitors assume they’re standing on part of the mountain itself.
The walkway of Golden Bridge Da Nang stretches almost 150 metres, curving above the treetops and often disappearing into cloud on misty mornings. Within months of opening in 2018, CNN, TIME, and The Guardian had all featured it, and international travel publications have repeatedly ranked it among the world’s most beautiful pedestrian bridges.
The bridge may be what brings most visitors here, but it’s only one part of Ba Na Hills. Beyond it are the French Village, Le Jardin d’Amour, and mountain viewpoints, all worth exploring before the journey back down by cable car.
Best for: photographers, architecture enthusiasts, and first-time visitors to Da Nang.
Best time: early morning, before the cable cars fill up and the mist burns off.
Duration: allow half a day, including the cable car ride and time at Ba Na Hills.
Good to know: temperatures are noticeably cooler than in Da Nang, so it’s worth bringing a light jacket, even in summer.
